Folkston is home to the beautiful and extensive Okefenokee Swamp. It also is home to many small businesses and entrepreneurs. Many tourist visit this town, not only to experience the swamp lands, but to watch trains as well.
Living in a small town can limit the perspective of one’s wondering mind, leaving one to believe that hardly anything else exists beyond the town. Folkston is a town that I love; filled with small town "mom and pop" restaurants, a quaint Main Street and high school sports. But in addition to its charm, growing up in Folkston has had its challenges. A lack of cultural experience and awareness seems to permeate my small town of Folkston, where most excitement is full-filled through watching trains go by or attending the high school football game on Friday nights. Theres not much change that could occur for Folkston, its size holds it back from true potential, but I so wish to see is grow beyond what it is now.
I HAVE LIVED IN FOLKSTON MY ENTIRE LIFE. IT IS A SMALL TOWN, CLOSE ENOUGH TO BIG CITY, LESS THAN 40 MILES, TO GET ANYTHING YOU NEED, YET FAR ENOUGH AWAY TO BE RURAL, AND SPECIAL. WHEN YOU READ "IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD" DESCRIBES FOLKSTON. EVERYONE KNOWS EVERYONE, AND MY PARENTS REPORT THEY WOULD NOT HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY. I DON'T BELIEVE I WOULD CHANGE ANYTHING, BECAUSE OFTEN CHANGE CAUSES GROWTH, AND GROWTH OF THIS QUAINT TOWN WOULD TAKE AWAY FROM ITS CHARM.
