The strengths of Fitchburg are its affordability and diversity. But with lower housing costs come many drawbacks. Utility rates are high, the roads are horrible, and the city government is not representative of or responsive to its citizens. Italian males cling to power and fight tooth and nail to keep others from getting any real power or to make needed changes to city governance. The ordinary working class residents are great, helping each other out as much as they can, but the government is a big impediment, not investigating property crimes so their statistics look good, leaving schools in rough shape with rats and roaches while building a shiny new city hall for themselves, eager to issue parking tickets which dissuades people from frequenting downtown businesses. Some Boards are comprised of a majority out of town individuals who look down on residents and try to micromanage and fine them for not following Karen and Dick standards they can't afford.
We do have a homeless population and somewhat of a drug problem. However, I find it no worse than most other small cities! In fact, Fitchburg is the most unique city. The architecture is old and beautiful, and there is so much history. There's an art museum and a couple upcoming breweries. On the outskirts, it's a small town feel. Downtown it's busier and there are a few homeless people wandering about. Some of the population that hangs around down there are actually very kind! Nothing bad ever happened to me, even when I fooled around down there as a kid. I went to the public schools here my entire life, too. I got into a university where I went to school with kids who got private educations all their lives and kept up with them, if not performed better than them academically. The public schools are good and the teachers are helpful. Fitchburg is such a unique place to be if you give it a chance.
While there are plenty of kind and creative folk in Fitchburg, there's also a lot of not so great areas with crime and drugs and homeless people. It'd be nice if we could come together as a community to solve the drug abuse issues and help the homeless in our area.
