Fernandina Beach Reviews
Rating 4.22 out of 5 58 reviews
Fernandina Beach is a charming small city with a quaint historic downtown. There is much to do for tourists and residents alike. On the plus side: fantastic Museum of History, festivals, beaches, dining, fine art studios and tree canopy. Retirees have many options for volunteering. The age of residents swings to 60+, educated and conservative (although more liberal political viewpoints abound among City residents). BUT: this island has been overmarketed to the point locals can't enjoy their downtown area due to crowds and the time it takes to find parking. Property values are high, which limits younger people and workers finding affordable housing. More and more of the tree canopy is being lost to development in spite of efforts of activist groups to save it. Homeowners insurance rates have doubled in the last year, and vacation rental prices are increasing 30%-40% for the same reason. It is a beautiful place to visit, but money and patience are needed to live or visit here.
Fernandina Beach creates a uniquely safe environment for all of its residents. Every single person I have come across has been nothing less than kind. Everyone in the community has had the dedication to keeping the city clean. It really is such an enjoyable place to live!
We moved here hoping that we would love living here, as we've been visiting for over 30 years. Upside: It is a safe community to live in, no worries about crime at all. Beaches are beautiful, & very dog friendly, they stretch for miles. Downtown area is charming & there are a lot of cute shops & restaurants. Ritz Carlton Salt restaurant is one of the best in the U.S. Community pool on Atlantic Avenue is a lovely place to swim laps under the Florida sun.
Downside: It is a VERY small town, with HIGH REAL estate taxes, very high prices to live in basic housing, expect to spend over $700,000 if you want a luxury home. Have to travel to Jacksonville to find ANYTHING that exists in most larger cities. A woman working at a local salon told me this was "God's Waiting Room" which was freaky. Real estate nightmares if you don't have the best agent. People who live here aren't all that friendly to newcomers. A Beautiful place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live here. We're leaving.
