Fanwood Reviews
Rating 4.43 out of 5 14 reviews
Our family recently moved to the area from another well known suburb of NJ and are so happy with our decision! Fanwood has a small town feel with good neighbors, updated parks, fun activities for families and is in the middle of many redevelopment projects that will only continue add to the charm of this area. Transportation to NYC is via the train is easy and convenient. My kids are thriving at the schools and are much happier here. Best move ever!
The town and the people are great. Reasonable lots, decent sized homes. The train's a big plus. Proximity to quality restaurants, highways, and a quaint town center are all positive aspects. That said, the taxes are extortionate. We were told that we needed to pay more during government lockdowns due to coronavirus and the loss of train station parking revenue but our taxes have only gone up further and the station lot is packed as it was pre 2020. Since we've been here they've also farmed out the sewer costs so there's an extra hidden tax as well. In the past 7+ years our taxes have gone up almost 40%. If any other service went up that much in that period of time it would go out of business. We're now also paying extra taxes for a new and entirely unnecessary library that is costing the town well over $8mm. If it were more reasonably priced from a tax perspective it would be borderline perfect.
Fanwood, New Jersey is a fascinating little suburb in the middle, or central part of New Jersey. It is a nice town to live in if you are thinking of starting a family, and make a moderate or higher income. It is a good town for commuters because there is a train station in the center of the town, and many bus lines. It shares a school district with the neighboring town, Scotch Plains. There are also many nighttime, and fun activities in the neighboring towns, no more then 10 minutes away. The real estate prices are higher, and so are the taxes, but it is a very safe and suburban town and good for the price.
