Close enough to the city, but far away enough to have a small town feel. The town is more diverse than downtown Portland, people are generally nicer here, and the town has a slightly slower pace. Lots of great parks, historical sites, food spots, and coffee shops.
I have lived here for 16 years. The city has declined over the years. It is separated economically. One end of the city has high-income living while the other end has poverty level living. There should be more of a median. I do not feel safe walking outside of my gated community. The nearby grocery stores are filled with homeless and drug related problems.
I've lived in Fairview for 6 years now and it's a very small, cute town, but doesn't feel like it because it's so close to Wood Village, Gresham and Troutdale. It's not a far commute from parts of Portland also, so you have access to almost anything you need. The night life is pretty much non-existent within the city of Fairview, but a 5 minute drive is all you need to get to the city next door for some bars and activities. It's got lots of cut neighborhoods of houses, and I've never felt un-safe.
