You will never hear anyone say that they can't find something to do here. There's a healthy variety of cultures, city life and outdoor recreation, and employment opportunities. It gets busy sometimes, and the cost to live here versus some other areas farther away from DC may keep people with families from enjoying this area, but the quality of life simply can't be beat. It's conveniently close to DC and has a metro running through the heart of the city, so commuters don't have to worry about working far from home. The public schools are recognized for their superb educational quality and George Mason University has a great reputation.
Overall I think this area is much better than other areas around the country/state. Certainly there's its problems and has room for improvement, but living in and growing up in Fairfax has been a fortunate thing. It's a suburban area with lots of neighborhoods, shopping areas, schools, etc so its great for kids to grow up in. Lots of diversity and many professionals live in the area, and the majority of kids here go to college (good ones at that). Fairfax is also extremely close to other areas such as Annandale and Centreville, and DC is right next to us, so there's always things to do. Unfortunately, it's extremely pricey here and real estate is a premium here.
Great place to raise a family. Excellent schools, access to open trails for biking and park space, many options for shopping, only 12 miles out from DC but rough commute with decent metro, numerous dining options with every type of ethnic cuisine available, 2 1/2 hours from beaches, 1 hour from the mountains, diverse culturally and truly every amenity one could possibly want from a suburban community.
