I’ve lived in Elmont now, for 2 1/2 years and I’m glad, we moved here. This is is a very friendly town. Neighbors are supper friendly and support one another. Very quiet, sometimes too quiet. There’s so much diversity and i love it! This place is a melting pot. Most people own their homes and takes pride in that. There are a variety of places to eat and shop. Public transportation can be better; the NICE buses are not the most reliable. But if you drive, there’s no issue. There’s currently, the hockey stadium being built, with a new hotel and outlets and restaurants. The good thing is living in Elmont puts you in close proximity to NYC, about a 20 minutes ride via LI railroad. Overall, this place is a great option for anyone looking to live in a suburban environment, but still with a city vibe.
As a White person who moved from Massapequa to Elmont in 9th grade, I realized how ridiculous the amount of internerilzed racism is on long Island. Elmont is a middle-upper class majority African American neighborhood. Crime is virtually non-existant and the streets/storefronts look just as clean and safe as any other NYC suburb. But the perception is still that Elmont is "dangerous" and "Ghetto" among the surrounding, majority White suburbs. Elmont is a wonderful suburb of working class people who mostly commute into the city for work, I know many people who have lived in Elmont longer then I have and none have ever experienced or witnessed any crime, so if it isn't alreafy clear, it's a great, accepting, family friendly suburb that gets a bad wrap solely because of the color of the skin of people who live here. Shame but at least the Cost of living is lower and the schools/quality of life is just as good. Definitely recommend.
I've been a resident of Elmont for all my life. It is a bit pricey to live around here due to the perks of being close to NYC like better public transportation but it's worth it! If you're a parent and are looking for activities for your children, there are different sports programs for young children and teens at the park and schools. If your child isn't sport savvy and you still want them to be involved, there are multiple after-school and summer activities for them to choose from in the library. If diversity is a priority for you, this town has a lot of it and celebrates it with different events. If you're thinking about staying here for a little bit or a while, you won't regret it!
