Elmira is beautiful. She has been known in the past as the Queen City but I think a good way to describe her currently is the Phoenix City. Elmira has had a bad reputation for a long time but as someone who has lived here for going on 5 years, I see things changing. I see Elmira rising back towards being a safe, active, fun, prosperous city. I see small businesses popping up and staying in business. I see the Downtown Development group making changes to bring even more life to the city. I see old empty buildings being bought and filled with new businesses, spaces for community groups/dance teams/sports practices, and generally repaired. Elmira is on the up and up; and I love that I get to live here during this time.

Living in Elmira has its ups and downs. There are barely no outlets for teens and young adults, making it evident that our crime rate and incarceration rates have increased over the years. We have the Equal Opportunity Program but unfortunately they are unable to do very much because funding is always being cut. I would like to see a big change in the Black community here at home. I would like to create opportunity for those less fortunate but still want to strive for more. I would also like to see a change in Elmira's eastside. Please consider me for this scholarship, I truly profess to uplift and make real change in my home.
Elmira is my hometown; I've lived there my entire life, but there are many changes I'd like to see. It seems like Elmira has become a "prison town." The only thing many people know Elmira for is our prison & therefore it attracts not the most reputable people. It's saddening because there are so many positive qualities about this area, including my soon to be school, Elmira College. Elmira College is a beautiful school that has kept many of their buildings intact & have since been made into historical sites. This beautiful private school attracts people from all over the northeast to Elmira. Another great quality about Elmira is that it's so close to the Finger Lakes region, which attracts people from all over the U.S. We have recently just been informed that downtown Elmira will once again be renovated in order to attract more visitors to stores & the First Arena for hockey games. I would love to see this town get the love it deserves & no longer just be known for it's prison.
