We moved here in 2020 with one child and now have three. I appreciate that I still feel safe running errands with the kids and less likely to be a victim of a carjacking then a little closer in. It's a friendly conservative town, but I still won't entrust my kids to the school system (I did one year but a fellow parent thinking it was "cute" when her 4 year old dropped the F bomb and flipping through pages of books in a preschool classroom convinced me that despite the speech help for my not neurotypical child, it wasn't worth sending him.)
Wish some of the regulations were a little loser, like being able to own chickens in a regular suburban size lot (like Coon Rapids residents can.)
If you have an autoimmune disease and want gluten free restaurants there are a couple of local options but obviously not as many as closer to the city.

Elk River is a bedroom community. Much of the community works outside of the local area. From a school system aspect, the education is good - providing opportunities for AP classes, PSEO, etc. It is a quiet community, making it a good place to raise a family. Housing is affordable. Community offers lots of bike and walking trails, but all need to be driven to.
I've lived in Elk River my whole life. I have enjoyed my time here playing sports and being part of the community. One thing that is nice about Elk River is that we are small enough so you get to know a lot of the people around the town but there are also still so many people to meet. Growing up playing sports was a big part of my life and I love that there are basketball courts, football fields, hockey rinks, bowling alleys, tennis courts, and golf courses throughout the city.
