Moved here about a year ago and couldn't be happier with the decision. Living in the Historic District on the east side of town has been a great experience, our new neighbors have been so warm and welcoming and we love the feeling of community you can find here.
Highlights include:
-The parks, Lord's, Channing, the River Walk, etc.
-The library, an invaluable community resource
-All of the beautiful old homes in the neighborhoods.
-And, of course, there are great establishments for eating and drinking: Verns, EPH, Kubo, Paul's, Ray's (a lot of possessive male restaurant names around here), all great!

It definitely lives up to it's nickname "The city in the suburbs". From good food to good services, the City of Elgin is a good place to call home. That being said, it is definitely not as walkable as it should be!
I moved here back in August and the town does have a bad rep., but the people in my area are actually pretty good. My only thing is that Elgin is sort of active and you do hear people speeding, and bangs off in the distance. However, if you just do you and mind your business, you're good!
