My family and I live on the Northwest side of Edmond and it is very safe and quiet which we like a lot. We love our new house. And the school districts are great. No crime in our community. But the diversity is really not there! And people are very cliquish and if you don't fit into their bubble, they will ignore you like you don't exist. Especially if you are a person of color, mixed, Asian, etc like my family. We lived abroad for many years and never experienced anything like this. It just seems like in Edmond, they will tolerate you but they won't get to truly know you! It is predominately white in our community, but if you are a person of color or in interracial relationships or have mixed children, they may not even talk or truly associate with you. It is like covert racism/prejudice in a modern way. We never see any person of color in any HOA meetings or participate in any community gatherings due to the feeling of being un-welcomed. It is the reality! This from my experience.
I moved from North Carolina to Edmond Oklahoma when I was eight years old. Everything seemed so strange and new to me: the plains, lack of trees, the culture, and the schools. Most of my experience in school has been pleasant. Everyone eventually has a rough patch in school though. I am very thankful to go to Edmond Public schools though. It is easily one of the most well-funded districts in the state. Everyone here is very kind and level-headed. Simply put, they are the most normal people out there. We have a lot of food options here and a sprawling downtown area, where the University of Central Oklahoma is, which is the third largest school in the state. Edmond only has a few problems though. The road quality is very poor. Sometimes drivers crash going to intersections because the roads don't line up on opposite ends. Also, it seems as if nobody wants Edmond to evolve. It is a long and strenuous process to get any new build here, and most of the times it gets rejected.
Living in Edmond, Oklahoma, strikes a perfect balance between community and privacy. The city fosters connections through events like the Downtown Arts Festival and farmers' markets while respecting individual space. Still, improvements can be made, particularly in expanding public transportation options to reduce congestion, promoting outdoor amenities like bike lanes and community gardens for a healthier lifestyle, and enhancing cultural diversity through festivals and educational programs. Overall, Edmond is a welcoming city with potential for positive growth.
