My family and I live on the Northwest side of Edmond and it is very safe and quiet which we like a lot. We love our new house. And the school districts are great. No crime in our community. But the diversity is really not there! And people are very cliquish and if you don't fit into their bubble, they will ignore you like you don't exist. Especially if you are a person of color, mixed, Asian, etc like my family. We lived abroad for many years and never experienced anything like this. It just seems like in Edmond, they will tolerate you but they won't get to truly know you! It is predominately white in our community, but if you are a person of color or in interracial relationships or have mixed children, they may not even talk or truly associate with you. It is like covert racism/prejudice in a modern way. We never see any person of color in any HOA meetings or participate in any community gatherings due to the feeling of being un-welcomed. It is the reality! This from my experience.
Moved here out of state from the midwest for a job opportunity. It has a slight midwest suburb feel to it in terms of neighborhood, lots of churches & its extremely conservative. Most job opportunities are in OKC. Edmond is bubble and theres not much to do and lacks diversity-- theres mostly Caucasian folks. The schools people keep praising about are average, its not worth paying an arm and a leg for a house in Edmond just for the schools. For its people, Edmond is very cliquey. If you don't offer something spectacular that people can leverage on, seems like you'll just be left out. Most will be friendly to you in your face but pay no mind to get to know you or consider you in many spaces. Very rare to find genuine relationships. You kinda have to learn your own way, and take your own route as some people here are closed off and unwelcoming. Overall its not a bad place to live, but its not what its cracked up to be and "known for."
Locals call Edmond a 'bubble' for a reason - the region is clean, is very safe, and feels isolated from the rest of Oklahoma City. Housing around the Edmond is pretty affordable and the schools within the city can boast about it's students' high test scores and graduation rates. However, as an international student residing in Edmond, this city can be very inconvenient. Nothing is within walking distance and owning a car is almost a necessity. I recommend choosing a school with bustling businesses right outside of campus for those without motorized transportation, or make friends with someone who has a car. The city also doesn't have a night life. Most restaurants, including fast food joints, close by 10 PM with a few that close at 1 AM. As a college student it can be rough finding a midnight snack on finals week.
