Working in Dunwoody
The community really rallys around its schools! Im a student at Dunwoody High School and I must say that the teaching staff there is really quite incredible. That said, the community and the school have some SERIOUS flaws. The school is increasingly overcrowded and the roads are completely overwhelmed with traffic. The community is very sheltered and people often use the phrase ¨The Dunwoody Bubble" to describe how cut off Dunwoody is from the rest of the world. The well-off suburban neighborhoods of Dunwoody, GA are incredibly homogenous, politics are extremely divisive, and the school remains heavily segregated to this day. I have met a select few incredible people in my time at Dunwoody and the school can do you a lot of good if youre willing to work, which is why I have given it 4 stars, but theres far more to this community than meets the eye.
Dunwoody has a small town feel with all of the amenities of a big city. It's the best of both worlds! People are very friendly. There are many wonderful parks, woods, and walking trails. There are countless outdoor concerts, festivals, and family-friendly activities. Dunwoody even hosts the largest 4th of July parade in Georgia. The neighborhoods are very safe and the public schools are some of the best in the state. Yet Dunwoody is centrally located to all of metro Atlanta's major job centers so commute times average just 15-25 minutes. (It only takes 5 minutes to get to 285, 85, and 400- Atlanta's three main highways.) Dunwoody has a great selection of restaurants and shops. It has one of the largest shopping malls in the Southeast- Perimeter Mall. Dunwoody is a wonderful place to raise a family where you won't have to compromise anything- commute, schools, safety, shopping, or amenities. Dunwoody has it all and we feel so blessed to live here!
I grew up in Dunwoody. Overall it’s quiet and safe to walk around or ride your bike at night, but the people in my neighborhood were just not friendly people. The Dunwoody moms were the worst. They are quick to socially ostracize someone and are extremely homophobic. They are not exclusive; I never felt like I was apart of a true community. There is nothing to do after 9pm. The public schools are only good for “gifted” students. We actually had great teachers, but the other kids for the most part had teachers that acted more like babysitters than educational instructors.
