I have lived in Des Plaines for a couple years now and overall its a nice city. There is low crime, its quiet, good schools for your kids, nice restaurants nearby. My only complaint with it would be that there's not a crazy amount of fun activities to do in the city itself, if you want to go to the beach or something like that its a drive to chicago. And any drive to chicago is going to be met with crazy amounts of traffic in the morning or evening. If you are a commuter and plan to drive to work in the city do not live here, something thats a 20min drive no traffic will become an hour drive during rush hour. If your looking to raise a family in a peaceful place this is a nice neighborhood for you.
Life in Des Planes is organised and structured, the city offers a variety of grocery stores, different cultures cuisine and some Polish, Bulgarian, Bosnian and Mexican shops. However, the city does not offer many theatre or cinema facilities, and also you can not find any park there. Not only enriching the neighbourhood with any of those entertainments would benefit the local community, but also might attract more people to move in. Moreover, some of the building located in downtown Des Planes has an outdated exterior which have a significant impact on those who are just passing thru the downtown area with the train. Proper investment into those facilities could bring many newcomers along with increasing the revenues for further improvements. Despite all that the overall feeling of the neighbourhood as a place to live is, friendly and safe, there are good schools and children are safe in this area.
The schools are great and there are many local shops! Very safe place to live! In my experience, it's a kind and connected community.
