As a youth that grew up in this town there is pretty much nothing to do, save for going to the bowling alley, the movies, and eat at one of the fast food restaurants. Many people who grow up here leave for better opportunities elsewhere, as the economy has never been a big strength for this town. Racism is prevalent, as most adults here have never lived anywhere besides this region of the state so they don't care to understand the experience of minorities or other people who are different than them. There's not much to do, poverty is very prevalent but not visible, people are depressed, so it's the perfect environment to get hooked to drugs, and Defiance has definitely got its taste of the heroin epidemic. A family friend works as an EMT and he said that a majority of the calls they get are either elderly people or heroin overdoses. That pretty much sums Defiance up in a nutshell.

Family safety - good for raising kids but not a lot of family friendly entertainment/activities
Downtown shopping is nice, very charming but overall quality of shopping is poor. The mall leaves a lot to be desired. Would be nice to have some bigger chains for more variety of shopping.
Night life is mostly bars. Variety would be great; dinner theater, wineries, or martini bars, comedy clubs etc
As a kid growing up here, I hated it because there was "nothing to do." Now that I'm older, I'm glad I was raised in a small town like Defiance. I lived outside the city limits on a busy road. It was safe enough that my family would go on bike rides on the back roads and never had to worry about safety. It's the type of area where you could leave your doors unlocked, but you lock them, just in case. The schools here are very good and adequately prepare students for life after graduation. Teachers here care about their students doing well and will do ensure their students develop skills they will need in the future. It's a friendly environment where everyone knows everyone. This can be annoying because grocery shopping turns into an all-day event because you ran into everyone you know. As I stated before, there isn't a lot to do here. There are bowling alleys, batting cages, putt-putt courses, a very small mall, and a handful of restaurants. Hope you're up for making your own fun!
