Dayton is a small town where people greet you with a smile, wave on the streets and yield in traffic to let you in front of them. There are many locally-owned businesses that sell antiques, trendy clothing, flowers, farm-fresh fruits and veggies and crafts. We have large fishing tournaments since we are located on the TN River. There is hiking in Pocket Wilderness and other outdoor activities. We have a private Christian college (Bryan College) in town where students are heavily involved in our community. We have an annual Strawberry Festival which brings about 10,000 visitors. We have most denominations of churches in our community. There are plenty of civic organizations as well. We have a Care Center where men and women can come for parenting resources and support. We have a community center that offers year-around sports for youth including travel teams. The community center is also a place to exercise for all ages. It is a blessing to live here.
Dayton is slightly above the average small town. I would personally recommend anyone to come here; however, the main caveat to that is currently the population size is in the sweet spot of just enough people to qualify for large chains like Walmart and not too many that we have more than one high school for the county. The public school in Dayton is exceptional as their students often outperform students from other neighboring towns. A typical Southern small-town, there is not much to do as far as entertainment, but its proximity to several cities around Southeast Tennessee makes it a great place to call home. After all, that sort of attention causes head-splitting traffic, the wrong kind of attention, etc. I see it more as a launching point to other cities where work is easier available and there are more ample opportunities. A good place to call home, if you're willing to commute to Chattanooga or Knoxville.
It's very boring here. However, it is a more populated area than many towns and cities in east Tennessee.
