Many of the buildings lately have been shut down due to larger companies taking over in the area. New buildings are built while the older ones are left empty and sitting there. Michigan City is the city I primarily do everything in, as I attended k-12th grade in the Michigan City School system. The area is in need for businesses that bring higher income. Michigan City has a large variety of places to dine out and shop, but not enough high paying jobs to support the area. Michigan City/ LaPorte area is a very depressed. It is a shame because it has so much to offer. Between the Dunes and Lake Michigan it has amazing potential, and it once was a great city to live in. If the community was able to work together I believe Michigan City could be an amazing place to live once again.
This year I have noticed Michigan City has really stepped up their game with police. Michigan City is also building a new police station which will be a great addition to the downtown Michigan City area. The police have been letting little slide in our area which is great, although the crime rate still should come down significantly more. The fire station is quick to respond whenever they are called.
Michigan City and LaPorte fortunately do provide a large amount of jobs. The downside to this is that they are usually minimum wage jobs.More jobs need to be provided that give more opportunity and higher wages. Without good wages the area does not thrive, which is clear to see if someone comes into the area.
