A 10 to 15 minute drive to Front Street gets you most things and a 20 to 30 minute drive gets you pretty much anything else that isn't on front Front Street. There are chain restaurants but there are also a lot of local restaurants. Front Street is mostly gas, grocery stores, and restaurants but only a few minutes more and you have access to the mall and Vestal Parkway which has a lot of department stores for items besides gas and food.

I love my hometown. The history, the stability, the sense of home
The job market used to be great when my mom was a kid because we had IBM, Universal, Lockheed Martin, and a few other big companies. Some are still here but on a much smaller scale. There are a lot of people that live off of welfare in near by school districts but my school district was mostly middle class people where both parents had decent jobs.
