Chelsea is a small town in the southeast of Michigan, just to the west of Ann Arbor. Lots of people who live in Chelsea work in Ann Arbor in order to afford living here, as cost of living and the average price of homes has increased drastically over the past few years. The only possible way to avoid the extremely expensive housing market while still being in the school district is to live upwards of ten miles out of town, where most of the roads are dirt. My graduating class of a few years ago consisted of about 200 people, the vast majority of which were white. Chelsea is a very sheltered town that seems to avoid the turbulence of the outside world, which can be taken as a positive or negative thing. Overall, I understand why so many young, relatively wealthy, families decide to live in Chelsea.
The community is safe and welcoming. However, it is primarily white people, which made it hard to grow up learning about the experiences of people that are different to me. The football team is a staple in this town, as well as many community parades and gathering opportunities. The education system is one of the best in our state, and one that continues to evolve to support the needs of every student and every background.
Chelsea is a small town, filled with farms and small local stores. On Friday nights, it seems like the whole population is at the football stadium cheering on the home team. Chelsea is a place where you can walk down the streets and see many faces that you know, the Jiffy Mix factory, and the town's clocktower. Chelsea takes pride in everything the town does, from the sports team to academics, and to many seasonal parades. Jeff Daniels is one of the greats from Chelsea. Jeff still has a permanent home here and owns a theater to inspire young artists. Tony Scheffler was the football hero of the town. Tony came back to his little home town to raise his family. Chelsea is a little dot on a map but now has a spotlight on Animal Planet. One of our old farms is now a barn sanctuary for farm animals in need. Chelsea is a place where you grow up in the tradition of going to the rivery football game, waving to your neighbors as you pass, and supporting and encouraging the youth.
