Cheslea is a wonderful place for families. The school system is highly ranked, and there are many parks geared toward students and children. The restaurant scene has greatly improved in the last decade. There is not much to do at night, you would have to drive to Birmingham for events. Apart from retail, teaching, and food service jobs, most career opportunities are in Birmingham.

Chelsea is a quiet community southeast of Birmingham. Like others have indicated you have to travel “over the mountain” on Hwy 280 for good shopping, dining, etc. It’s a highly congested and a poorly designed roadway. Chelsea has great elementary schools and we had a great experience at the middle school. We have not been impressed with the high school. It seems that they do mostly worksheets and I have found the high school to not really encourage parent involvement. If you want to live in a small town area which centers around church, sports and eating barbecue this is the place for you. The area is comprised of transplants from all over the country referred to as “Snowflakes”by the native Alabamians, good old country folks that have lived here for many generations and new money Southerners in mansions on acreage with Budlight in Yeti coolers on their covered patios. The area tends to be conservative in political leanings.
A lot of these reviews are outdated! Chelsea has several more food options now, and there is a city-run judicial system now. Chelsea is growing by leaps and bounds, and the people are wonderful examples of southern hospitality at its’ best! Check us out! You won’t be disappointed!!
