If you like taxes, traffic, and suburban sprawl this is the place for you. I am from NY and lived in Suffolk for several years and am sad to say that I found that the people tend to be rude and not particularly friendly. Real estate prices and taxes are high while government services are rather poor. In many areas it seem that property owners are challenged by high costs and as a result, homes are not properly maintained. Having lived in other parts of the country I now know that there are more attractive and friendly places to live.
Centereach isn't the best place to live, but it certainly isn't the worst either. Most of the town is nice and free-ish of crime but there are some shady areas near the main road. A lot of families live here and there are plenty of opportunities nearby for jobs, a great education system, an award winning library, and a lot of stores.
The location of Long Island is also very nice, but it's ridiculously expensive to live literally anywhere on the island. There isn't a single thing I can think of that isn't expensive. For that reason, in certain towns there are poorer people. Centereach is for the most part lower middle class.
However, I'd say that the pros of Centereach outweigh the cons especially for families. It's not really a place for young adults (I just never see them around) but the education and library opportunities for families are amazing. They also offer great job finding and college help programs for all ages and honestly I can't say enough good things about the library

Been living here my whole life and for the most part have had a good life. I do wish it wasn't so expensive to live here and I really wish we had more property since I'm a person that loves open spaces, horses, and wildlife.
Also, a HUGE problem with Centereach being part of the Town of Brookhaven is that Altice/Optimum internet is terrible and ridiculously unstable and expensive but the company will not fix it because they have a monopoly within Brookhaven and the town government condones that monopoly because it has been this way for more than 20 years.
