I think Valpo is great for families with younger kids. Once we start growing up, it gets very, very lame to be here and mostly all of us hate it. Don't get me wrong, Valpo is a great town in general. I have never felt unsafe living here. Valpo just really lacks on things to do and everything closes early. I do think Valpo is definitely growing and trying to make our area more of a city atmosphere with taller apartment buildings and more shopping. I think in the future, Valpo is going to be awesome. For high school students, it just becomes very boring to live here. The plus side for us, though, is the beach is very nearby and Chicago is only about 45 minutes away which is amazing. There is some nice parks and gardens in & around Valpo, which are a plus if you like that sort of thing. Overall, I just think Valpo is a lot better place for upcoming families with younger children or even older people. For us teenagers, it's just not much of a place for us to be right now.
The crime in my area is very low. It is very rare to hear about very much crime occurring in Valpo, especially my area. I think in terms of safety, my neighborhood/community is also good. There could be some more communal lights throughout the subdivision, since some parts get kind of dark at night, but otherwise safety measures are good overall.
Valparaiso has grown quite a bit in the last decade. One no longer has to travel to neighboring towns to gain access to large retailers, movie theaters, restaurants, etc. However the downtown area of Valparaiso still remains quaint and reminiscent of earlier days, while being perfectly maintained. A new Central Park allows young and old alike a leisurely day sitting with friends while watching children run under the fountains. One can purchase fresh produce in that area as well in season at the local Farmer's Market.
