Carbondale is a great place to raise a family. The public schools are great in the areas of academics, athletics, and the arts. There is very much a creative element to this town including the music and fine arts scene. SIU creates a very diverse population which allows for different religious and political views. There have been a couple shootings involving young black men in recent years which is concerning for both the police department and the citizens of Carbondale.

I very nice but small community. The city itself is charming with so many opportunities to explore the Shawnee National Forest surrounding the area. There is an abundance of places to visit in the forest including lakes, trails, cliffs, waterfalls, etc. all over the region so much so that it would take a lifetime to see every one! Besides that the people are generally kind and I've met some of the most important people in my life here.
Carbondale is a really small town, but with a lot of pizzazz, The University here is one of the most comfortable and beautiful ones I have ever been to. The campus is smack-dab in a forested area where white-tailed deer tend to hang out. With that there are a lot of great hiking experience to be had in Carbondale, IL. Just a short jog from Carbondale, you will find the giant city trails and even further you can hike at Shawnee!
