Carbondale has potential. It is a university town and has made some recent improvements to the roads, sidewalks, and the SIUC campus. However, crime in the area is getting out of control and there have been many recent shootings and stabbings. Something real must be done!

Decent place to live weather is good, diversity is great, and cost of living is awesome. JOb market is limited. I always say it is the best kept secret in the country. Small town feel, southern weather but 2 hours from St Louis and 5 hours from Chicago if you just have to be around congestion and noise. If you are a college student, work for the University, or work for the Hospital you are important and many rules and regulations are designed with these people in mind. ON the other hand if you don't work for these establishments you are ignored. I like most everything about Carbondale but I would like to see more consideration for the natives that are not connected to the largest corporations in Southern Illinois.
I love the homey feel of Carbondale while still experiencing all of the conveniences of a college town. Many local businesses are well-supported, and there is such diversity in the community, food options, and activities. Although there can be concerns about safety in certain neighborhoods, using common sense can easily prevent dangerous situations. There are many festivals and events for families of all ages to attend.
