Canandaigua Reviews
Rating 4.39 out of 5 18 reviews
I grew up in the West, but I’ve lived in small towns in Western NY for the past 8 yrs. Canandaigua has some really great features. Here’s a list of what I love:
- beautiful surroundings
- relatively good schools (excellent arts programs!)
- access to stores and restaurants (though limited)
- preservation of local history - beautifully maintained historic homes and architecture
- access to local farm fresh food
What I dislike:
- rough parts of town - very seedy areas near downtown.
- sky high sex offender rate.
- people are unfriendly and defensive - this is true of most of NY in my experience (compared to the West)
- taxes are out of control
- economically depressed
- not close to thruway
- lake area always over crowded
- very few family-friendly places. Even McDonald’s doesn’t have a play place. With such long winters, this can be really challenging.
- people stare if you have more than two children

Small city located near Canandaigua Lake, this community is easy to navigate through (even rush hour isn't awful) as well as enjoying summer and winter activities. Public schools are pretty good. Neighborhoods are friendly. Sonnenberg is amazing!
I absolutely love Canandaigua, everyone is so kind and friendly, you never feel out of place. I live just outside of Canandaigua but I go to Canandaigua Academy and work at Wegmans in Canandaigua.
