Due to the fact that the economic infrastructure of our local society is slowly deteriorating and we do not have a local income flowing abundantly, we don't have the funds to have nice locally owned businesses. People around here only care about cheaper prices and when big named companies come in town, the locally owned businesses suffer for it immensely because they cannot keep up with the price difference. Personally, I worked as a cashier for three years at my friend's parent's owned grocery store. It wasn't the nicest, but it felt like home and the community kept us alive with their ongoing support since its opening in 1948. When the grocery store Food Lion came in, the store was forced to shut down. This is the reality of most locally owned businesses around here. We cannot afford to have nice local businesses.
Things happen here and there, but the police handles it professionally. Also when schools are in session everything calms down.
We have a fair amount of variety in my town. There are enough big company stores that there is nothing that you can't get in town, but at the same time you need to go to a bigger city in order to go retail shopping etc. We have a few mom and pop stores but they are mostly for rural activities like farm equipment and fresh produce.
