I grew up Rock Island from when I was in Kindergarten until I graduated from Rock Island High School. Where I grew up was great but I knew several people and had close friends who were not as lucky to live in a "good area." I remember vaguely about my friends telling me how they would get stopped by gangs on their walk home from school, I remember them telling me that the street over from them just got "shot up." I count my blessings that that never happened to me. The schools now, more specifically, the high school I hear around town is not doing good. I believe it is 17% of students are not on track to graduate! To me that is obscured. All of this reflects on the environment around these kids. Drugs, alcohol and bad influences. We as a community need help these kids out. We shouldn't have to worry about walking down the street and wondering if it's going to be the last time we breathe. We shouldn't have to fear our kids playing outside. We need to come together.

I have had some experiences in Rock Island that I would not like to repeat. Once I went to a gas station and it was filthy and the tenet was very rude. I understand that this could be the gas station and not Rock Island but this has happened to me at a few different locations. Also, I am unimpressed with the cities effort to add green space for their residents. Just planting a few trees in the middle of all the concrete would increase residents, employees, visitors well being. Research suggests that green space has a positive effect on stress levels, mental health, and quality of life.
"Home of the Rocks"! That's what we call it. Rock Island is a great place to grow up it's very diverse. The sports teams are amazing. Rock Island is not perfect. That i'm glad for because that would be simply boring. I've lived here my entire life and believe it to be a great county.
