I was born and raised in Lakeland. Polk county is yet another American suburban sprawl: piss poor public transportation, substandard secondary schools, and a large income disparity. North of downtown Lakeland is a predominantly poor black community while south lives some very affluent communities. Segregation had a very clear economic impact which perpetuates the cycle of poverty and crime. The county has a fairly big meth problem that contributes to the popularity of the "Florida Man". For adults, there's little here in terms of viable careers outside of medicine and maybe education. For kids, not much to do here other than go to the movies or mill around downtown. Tough luck if you're not old enough to drive or don't have access to a driver: bike lanes are nonexistent and few bus lines exist. And parents wonder why their kids are inside playing video games all day! I am extraordinarily happy that I graduated and moved far away; I have no intention of ever returning.
Polk county has always been the laugh of central Florida. Known for being crazy and country. Although that is not all true. The county is beautifully made, with many city’s full of business and elegant homes. The balance of city to nature is incredible. Polk county is more then meets the eye, or covers the news, Polk county is the heart of Florida. So close to both coasts and not a far drive to popular cities like Orlando and Tampa. My county allows you to be close to the city, but live without big city problems. It’s a beautiful area everyone must experience.
When living in Polk county, you will feel relieved to find out how great the schools are. For the most part, you will be able to know that your child will get the proper education that they need going to schools such as Dundee Ridge Middle Academy. Also, Sandhill Elementary is a great school to attend if you want your child to feel at home in their community.
