We live on Edwards Air Force Base here in Kern County. By far one of the safest counties we have been stationed at! We’ve never had any issues personally, but if the Military Police need any assistance, they are always there and ready to assist.
Lake Isabella is great. It's a small town and there is a great community that makes you feel like family. There is a lot of things to do in the Kern. It's amazing!
Kern County is composed of the growing city of Bakersfield, and many smaller unique cities/towns that would otherwise be overlooked, but worth visiting. In Bakersfield you have the country music scene pioneered by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, where you can visit Buck Owen's Crystal Palace on Buck Owens Blvd, and see live performances. Bakersfield is also a hub for large business chains and restaurants to experiment with the sales of new items and food with the population.
A local gem that may be overlooked by visitors, is the Kern River Valley off of Hwy 178, where activities such as river rafting, hiking, camping, and rock climbing are common and readily available throughout the outlying areas of Kernville. The Sequoia National Forest also encompasses a large area of the Kern River Valley, which is worth taking a short drive to visit.
