DeKalb has a strong community relationship with Northern Illinois University. Many programs at NIU encourage community involvement and the DeKalb community has fantastic NIU pride. The people here are generally very nice. DeKalb is a comfortable place for college students to live and work. There are many great places to eat, for every type of palate. DeKalb has many different stores and businesses. The one major thing I would like to change is the level of crime in some neighborhoods within the county.

DeKalb is a close knit community with small town feel while being close to Rockford has all of the amenities of a big city. Just a short distance from Chicago and even Milwaukee, Madison and Janesville, Wisconsin. Taking your time to enjoy everything there is to offer from dairy farm breakfasts to the many local summer festivities, DeKalb always has something going on!
There is a lot of drug activity and violence in DeKalb. It is home to Northern Illinois University where there a lot of college students. There is section 8 housing just on the other side of campus, near student apartments and homes. It's not a place I would recommend living and raising children. There are plenty of food places and stores, but many are slowly closing and falling through the cracks.
