There are a lot of white people here that call themselves progressives and liberals but are uncomfortable with low-income neighborhoods being too close to their property.
The price for housing is increasing every day and the whole city is getting gentrified, so there's nowhere for the poor people to go, and the people with money are spending all of it on shitty apartments.
The school system I think is pretty good compared to most places, but be careful if your student has a serious learning disability [and is a poc] bc you'll have a lot of issues finding the right school for them. Some schools like to put their "special" classes in the basement(East High School).
Access to farmer's markets and community gardens is nice. Walking trails, nature preserves, and parks are all nice as well. And lastly, and most importantly, food diversity is great here! Lots of places to eat and new things to try. Many food trucks. Try Ha Long Bay, if you want some fantastic Thai food!

In Dane county or community would be described as diverse. However there is a lot of construction very frequently, traffic can get very long, and tiring. We also have a range of different neighborhoods, some seeming unsafe. However we have many neighborhoods perfect for a family, safe, near good schools, and clean! Dance county is a decent size with a good amount of people and action, but kind sometimes be crowded. Weather gets quite cold in the winter months.
With it being a 'college county', there are things they do and don't do well. It's a very diverse area filled with many college students, and the capitol of Madison is set up as such (with an abundance of bars, restaurants and clubs). Housing can get expensive quickly unless you know where to look if you are searching downtown Madison. It is mostly a safe place, drunkards are fairly common although harmless in most situations. It's all about UW-Madison, so prepare to be blasted in the face with Bucky the Badger.
