Branchburg Township Reviews
Rating 4.61 out of 5 23 reviews
It's nice if you're white. I've grown up as a person of color here and the amount of blatant racism I've seen from peers to even teachers is sad. It didn't take until I moved out to college to realize how many microaggressions I've faced from just living and being myself. The Facebook group is embarrassing with people constantly making sly comments about the new affordable housing coming and feeling "unsafe" because there are more people of color moving in. Of course, not everyone is like this but there are enough people to make me resent coming home. I never felt a sense of community here even though I know there is one, just never seemed to have room for someone "different". Branchburg is known for the Ballon Festival and the incident with David Friedman yelling slurs to his neighbor who is a person of color.
Branchburg is a small rural and suburban town where everyone knows each other. However, as a person of color, it is not very diverse with an in the ballpark estimate of about 75-85% caucasian. Growing up it was tough because I was different, but I now observe people of all races are moving in and there is much less racism in the town. I think the public schools are great and the education system is up to par. However, we do not have our own high school and share with Somerville. It is extremely expensive to live in Branchburg, such as paying taxes, and purchasing real estate. There are not too many store complexes in Branchburg, so there is usually a 10 minute commute from wherever you are going to Bridgewater, where there are plenty of stores. Nothing is really in walking distance for the neighborhoods are quite large. However, I have to say that our town is extremely safe with little to no crimes and a police station right on the main road.
I love my community! Branchburg has everything that I need and its location in New Jersey provides easy access to everything. We are approximately an hour from the mountains, beach, city, and farm lands.
