Benton is a friendly place IF you grew up there and have lived there all your life. Or if you are a white, heterosexual, conservative, evangelical Christian. The good old boy network is alive and well here. The county recently went wet, so alcohol can be purchased here, but there are no pubs or live music venues. No steakhouse. No bookstore. No bowling alley or skating rink. No Starbucks. But you can’t swing a cat without hitting a church or a bank. It’s very difficult (impossible) to get your child into dance or other after school activities unless you are in with the cool mom crowd (bleach blonde hair, huge SUV, everything they own monogrammed, fake nails, has a personal trainer, & vacations at the gulf where their family pix are made on the beach in matching outfits). Diversity/opposing viewpoints are not valued here. Church membership and proselytizing are. I definitely regret moving here.
I prefer going to Bryant, a nearby town, for most of my shopping (i.e. groceries, clothes, take-out, etc.). Particularly, the Benton Walmart is underwhelming; they're constantly out of products and poorly organized. Furthermore, Benton feels older, less hip, and the people are less educated or well-presented. Benton has a lot of stuff, though. I like the movie theater, the mini-golf course, some of the restaurants. They are currently doing significant construction in the are, which is frustrating. I understand it will make things better in the long run, but right now it is making for confusing traffic patterns and longer commute times. Also, I have no idea about any possible activities the town might have. Benton either has no community activities or just poorly advertises them, causing me to feel disconencted from my community.
I personally enjoy the town of Benton. It actually has a much more diverse community than one would expect but that's what makes it so unique! Benton itself doesn't have many places for entertainment which is something I would try to change, however, the community tries it's best to hold many events which are a blast to attend!
