Beckley is a relatively small town located in Raleigh County, West Virginia. Here, residents live with a dying coal mining industry resulting in a major deficit of jobs. They primarily survive on big business and international chains to provide them food, clothing, and daily necessities. As a generally family-populated town, you can find many adults to be either overweight due to a laziness in society or underweight due to drug addiction; the kids, however, tend to stay active, healthy, and youthful. Nights are boring or fearful depending if you're inside your home or on the street outside your home and the real-estate market is far from bustling due to the owner-clinginess of his or her homes and the lack of budget to build more. The state and local budget does not lack with just residential homes, but within the public schools too. Many classrooms cannot purchase new textbooks or study material, so teaching emphasis and curriculum is put on obsolete concepts.
There are great people here. Most people are not just nice, but genuinely good people. Over the last ten years roughly pain medication has really grabbed a hold of a lot of people, and this has caused issues with crime. Another thing that has hit the area hard is the regulations on the coal mines that have pretty much wiped them out. What most people do not realize is that the coal mines supply so much money to the entire city, county, and state and without that cash businesses have had to cut back. I hope our little town can turn it around because like I said there are great people here.
