I lived in BC for 12 years. Some reviews here remind me of the city I grew up in, yet many sound naïve to the world underfoot of them. There's much that's under the table or ignored, as more powerful people with interest in the cities appearance work hard to make it look nice, like there isn't as much crime and danger as there is, that the school systems are better than what they are, and that the government's concern for these rising issues are greater, because newcomers bring new money. Want to know why the youth don't attend public school? The education of those lower middle class or lower aren't prioritized. Aside from crime rates likely not truly reflecting reality, there's a serious pedophilia problem that seems to be growing. Don't ask the police or other officials for data, though, because they probably either have no idea or are pretending not to know. You can see the truth and the disparity of anyplace best based off of how the youth acts, but they often are silent lambs.
I've lived in BC most of my life. I see a lot of changes over the years. Crime has spiked and it seem like things are getting worse for the middle class. Growing up we used to be able to keep our doors unlocked, even at night. Now I would not dare to. I lock them even while sitting on the couch. Downtown is thriving.
There are a ton of new breweries, ethnicity festivals, and music festivals. There are four different school districts. Battle Creek Public is the worst. Many schools have been shut down due to lack of students. A lot of them come for poor areas around town. They seem to have no interest in attending or behaving correctly. I have herd of teachers quitting because of the abuse they face from children.; mostly elementary schools.

I like how everything is pretty close together, doesn’t take very long to get anywhere. The traffic is not completely unbearable compared to other places. I love to see them try to update the mall and have more kid/family friendly activities to do. As we all usually have to travel to Kalamazoo to do anything fun!
