Bar Harbor Reviews
Rating 4.14 out of 5 14 reviews
I have lived in Bar Harbor on and off for the last seven years. It’s a wonderful town nestled right next to Acadia National Park. It has a rich history and there are many activities to enjoy during late spring to early fall and the scenery is a sight to behold. Nature certainly is in one of its finest forms in Bar Harbor. There are some downsides to living in Bar Harbor. During the “tourist season” the town is packed to the brim with people from all over the world. It’s a great place to meet new people, but it’s overwhelming to have so many people in such a small town for months on end. Another downside is the difficultly to find affordable housing here in Bar Harbor. There are not many properties to buy or rent from and all of them are outrageously expensive. Shared living spaces are quite common in Bar Harbor. Also, once all of the tourists leave, most businesses in town close until the return of warm weather leaving few options for eating out or nightlife.
Overall, this is a great place to live when things are good in life. There’s plenty to do, places to eat, and places to hike and explore. Depending on where you live in town, the place is very walkable.
However, the housing situation worries me. Bar Harbor is not the place to have an imbalance of year-round rentals and short-term vacation rentals. Too many vacation rentals, no place for workers to rent, no workers, no business. We’re on a slippery slope and I’m not enthused to see the end of it. Businesses are already getting understaffed as the years go by.

Bar Harbor is a small town. In the summer it is very busy and there are many job opportunities in tourism. There are people from all over the world living and working there. The winter is much quieter. It is a great town for anyone who loves the outdoors, as its greatest asset is that it is very close to Acadia National Park. There is hiking all year, as well as swimming, skiing, ice fishing, snowshoeing, running, and boating. It is a truly beautiful area and a great place to grow up or raise a family. Unfortunately, the growing popularity of weekly rentals has made it much more difficult to find affordable year round housing.
