Aztec is a great place to live, work, and go to school. It is close to several other towns that offer places of employment, living accommodations, and several schooling options including a community college. Aztec also has access to several state universities through online education such as University of New Mexico and New Mexico State university. The safety of the town is fairly average for any small town but the Sheriff's Office is also very present in the community and within the schools in the area. There are several homes for rent and for sale in the area. These homes are incredible in their design; several incorporate a southwestern design with a modern twist. There are also several areas to go for outdoor adventures like Aztec Ruins that feature the ruins of the Anasazi. There is also the UFO landing area not far from town. Also in town there is a large city park that follows along the San Juan River. This town is very fortunate to have several modern accommodations available.
I liked that Aztec was a small town, I graduated with 180 other students, and I know most of them. The small town feel where everyone knows your name applies to Aztec. While Aztec is far from a metropolis it is surrounded by bigger cities such as Farmington New Mexico and Durango Colorado. Both of which are within driving distance and can provide the night life that big city lovers would enjoy. Aztec also has activities for those who love the outdoors, anything from mountain biking and fishing to snowboarding all within an hour dive at most. I enjoyed the hardworking and friendliness atmosphere of Aztec. Growing up in a small town encouraged me and my friends to make our own fun which I think made us more creative and able to have fun anywhere. I also think that the blue-collar environment instilled in me and my friends the value of hard work and providing. Does Aztec have its flaws absolutely, but in my experience, it was a great place to grow up.
Aztec is a quiet small town, a place where I personally would want to retire. But it has all the trappings of a dying rural town. There are few promising jobs in the area for people unless you become a manager somewhere or have a specialty degree in something like healthcare services or dentistry, and this is even more true as the oil fields in the county have dried up. Working at McDonald's or another fast-food chain or restaurant is fine if you are a high school student, but it's nothing to count on for more than a few years otherwise. A lot people here have alcohol, meth, or other drug problems. There are several hundred homes for sale here for a reason, and people were smart to leave town early on. Don't come here to raise a family or look for good educational or job opportunities. Keep driving on unless you plan to retire here.
