I grew up in Auburn and wouldn't have it any other way! There is a wide variety of restaurants which are all are amazing and no matter the season, there is always something to do. We have Lost Valley which is small, but it is a ski mountain nonetheless. We have a few small beaches and the Taylor Pond Yacht Club. There are also a few hiking trails and a wonderful apple orchard (Wallingfords). Auburn is also a perfect location because it is 30 minutes from Portland which is a great city on the ocean with malls and restaurants and countless activities. Auburn is also about an hour away from multiple larger beaches. It's small enough that it's not overwhelming but big enough to always be busy.
Auburn Maine is about as average as it gets. The school system is okay, scenery is about as interesting as you think it would be for central Maine, and most people who live here seem to be alright. There are a lot of different types of places you can live in including suburbs, neighborhoods, farmland, downtown apartments, etc so if you are thinking of moving to Auburn Maine there is most likely going to be a place here that fits your preferences in that respect. Overall I would say that most people keep to themselves and are more or less friendly to everyone regardless of their differences. It snows quite a bit during the winter though which some people do not appreciate. I think the snow is one of Auburn Maine’s most charming attributes though. It provides a very cozy feeling during the holidays and it is always a delight to see all of the snowmen lined up on people’s lawns after a storm.
I liked the plethora of shops and restaurants. While one of the bigger towns in Maine, it still holds a nature-y aspect which I love. It has many recreational activities and centers, like parks, basketball courts/facilities, gyms, indoor pools, tennis courts, biking/walking paths, a skate park, and more!
My only complaint would be the public schooling. The connection between the parents of students and the teachers/administrators are lacking. Important information feels hard to find more often than not, and staff ultimately have poor connection to parents of students, young and old. The high school is severely outdated and underfunded, but just recently got an OK to get replaced (after 15 years of it being proposed and denied constantly). Any time Auburn makes budget cuts, it's to the education system and schooling funds. Other than that, its a great place!
