Not safe for folks in the LGBTQIA+ community. Very few job opportunities. Lots of anti-vaxxers (all vaccines) so not super safe for people with suppressed immune systems. Terrible location if you need public transportation.
Location is nice - close to hiking, skiing, lakes. Above most of the valley smog. Gas is cheap at the local casino. It's not a terrible place to be if you don't want neighbors right on top of you and you like driving an hour to get groceries. The local "park" is the abandoned elementary school playground. The only other community space is the library. There's nothing to do if you don't drink.

I live in the foothills near Auberry, in Tollhouse. Auberry is quiet, the gasoline at the casino is cheap, and the air is cleaner than in the valley below. The people are a fairly even mix of friendly, weird, and downright mean. I stick to the friendly.
I'm not really joking when I express how badly some of the locals have blemished my nostalgia about small-town living. For example: during the Creek Fire last year, a rumor was started by a local that there was widespread looting happening at people's homes. No good reason. He was just being mean and starting trouble. Well, then all the weirdos came out of hiding from the evacuation crews to brandish firearms at well-meaning volunteers helping people get their animals out of the evacuation zones.
I rate this place as average because, truly, I enjoy the stories I accumulate by living here. If you value your peace, I do not recommend it at all.

Small foothill community with one elementary school, one junior high school, and high school. Located above the fog line and below the snow line.
