Working in Athens
The library is phenomenal; Lyndon House Arts Center, GA Museum of Art, Botanical Gardens are all fantastic. There are activities to keep kids busy provide enrichment opportunities and learning experiences with world class instructors. The parks are beautiful. Athens does not feel like a small town if you live IN Athens and not surrounding counties. The university brings people from all over the world and there are always new, interesting people to meet. The schools have been great so far. The teachers and administrators are highly qualified; amazing parental involvement, and a diverse student body. Past trends have been to live in surrounding counties for the "better schools" but there seems to be more investment in our schools with the county and parents choosing to stay in Athens. Yes, the county has to serve all of Athens' children and your child will be all the better up in as diverse an environment as our world. We only see it getting better in the future!
There is a very real reason Athens is known as "The Classic City." Athens is unique in that it is a college town, but it has it's own culture beyond the university as well. Downtown has hundreds of amazing restaurants, stores, bars, and more that are local and specific to the city. It's not uncommon to hear musicians playing on the streets, providing an impromptu concert to any who pass them by. Enjoy the outdoors at the State Botanical Gardens ("The Botans"), or go walking through the trails at the many nature centers. Love dogs? Enjoy one of the many dog parks in town, too! There is something for everyone here in this amazing little city.
My experience with Athens has been great. There is always something going on here. Some of my favorite parts of Athens are the coffee shops, restaurants, music, and campus life. My favorite coffee shop is Buvez. It's new and just opened this past year, and it is already my favorite study spot! My other favorite coffee shops are Iron Works and Jittery Joes. They have great coffee and a great atmosphere. Another great thing about Athens is all the incredible food! My very favorite restaurant is Taqueria Del Sol. It's mexican food and it is so yummy. I get the same thing every time and it's my favorite meal. There are also great restaurants downtown like The Place, Ted's Most Best, and Taqueria Tsunami. There is a great variety and something for everyone. Another great part of Athens is the music! There are many local bands, as well as the Georgia Theater. Big names come to the Georgia Theater and there is always a show to see. Overall, I love Athens and there's always something to do!
