Great historical homes, but is in a very poor area. City government can be described as corrupt, with certain rules and regulations passed that directly benefit them (as they often own apartment complexes, rental properties, etc). Funding in the town often goes toward projects that do not help the poor, and grants are often applied for to complete basic tasks in town. The private college is separated from the town, and only seeks to improve the town around its immediate area (renovation, street lighting, and flags down streets surrounding it).

Atchison is boring. That's the most I can say about it. It's boring, the city is considering taking out the mall (which hosts many things through out the year, like Halloween trick or treating, Winter Festival, etc). The city commission does not care for houses as they should, brushing off sewer problems that landlords refuse to fix. Rent rates are ridiculous, considering the ridiculous landlords.
Atchison is a diverse city with a wide chance of opportunity for work, night activities, and restaurants. I am so glad I got to grow up in a community where we come together in tough times and in cheerful times. We have our biggest festival in summer called Lake Fest where many popular or on the rise country singers come and perform for the birth of Amelia Airheart.
