Astoria Reviews

Housing is extremely limited if you are renting, and definitely don't expect a garage if you rent a house. Night life is limited, two expensive breweries, and mediocre restaurants, lots of dive bars. Hardly any live music. It is always windy, even in the summer. Rarely gets hot. Giant river, pretty to look at, but no one uses it for recreation except for a couple weeks in the summer for salmon fishing. Almost everyone here is not from here. Some cool historic buildings but the infrastructure is failing and the whole town is crumbling. Most of the people moving here are old retirees who like to stare out the window at the river. If you drive a subaru, love walking your dog while overdressed, and drinking overpriced beer, then this is the town for you!
Don't know who wrote the main blurb on Astoria, but it's laughable. Astoria could only be called "suburban" by someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word or Astoria. Astoria is a layered, beautiful city near the Pacific that overlooks ship traffic on the Columbia. Its roots are traced to Lewis and Clark and its subsequent settlements to the British, then fur traders, loggers, and Finnish and Norwegian fishermen. It's a unique place - the opposite of awful Seaside - and a very desirable place to live. Yes, there are some great bars, a few good restaurants, more than adequate brewpubs, and several excellent coffee houses like Columbia Roasters and Coffee Girl. But to judge any place just by its "bars, coffee and nightlife" is shallow, misleading, and strictly for hipsters. Sure it rains and it can be chilly in winter, but it had seasons unlike other parts of the country. Astoria is unique and wonderful if you're grownup enough to grasp what's really worthwhile in a city.
Favorite Oregon coastal town. The life here is beautiful. The culture here is so beautiful. Fishermen going about their business, loggers cutting trees, log truck drivers everywhere. Farmers. I love seeing how so many different people live in this small town with so many different paths of life. The diversity is mesmerizing and I am so grateful to be a local.
