Crime & Safety
I grew up in the inner city of Chicago, so transitioning to rural Illinois was a big change. But I love the fact that you can know the people around you. I really enjoy living here, and am glad my family moved here. Comparing this area to the other places I've lived would be difficult because it's so different. I definitely feel safer here than I would in the city, but there are some kinds of shops that I would really love to be able to access that I can't because it's a smaller area and we can't support them. I do see the area continuing to grow and blossom, however. Local communities are investing in business and community restoration, so I see things beginning to improve.
It really depends. My particular small town has no problem with crime, but the area in general deals with drugs, violence, and suicide at pretty high levels. Police patrols are not uncommon, and all my experience with local police has been positive.
