We moved to Anacortes in 2016. We loved the thought of living in a beautiful place, without triple digits for 6 months. BUT we are musicians, and are used to a thriving music community (not just open mics where you play for free) with a lot of venues and opportunities. Our real estate agent said she saw our music career suffocate once we moved there. There are some fun bands, and talent, but you can’t make a living as a musician there.
At the time, we were able to buy a home on the water, for a fraction of the price of other places on the west coast. This is no longer the case. There is a huge drug problem, and junkies started going down our road to shoot up, which made our hike to our PRIVATE beach unsafe. I felt horrible when the new owners of our home were burglarized one week after moving in. We still visit, and it’s shocking how it seems to be really going downhill.
I did meet a couple dozen incredible people, and will vacation there forever!

I grew up here. Its beautiful place to live. There is a a huge hidden drug problem. People are rude and judgy. They love to gossip and if they disagree with you, they turn almost hostile. There's nothing for kids and teenagers to do. Honestly its more of a retirement community than anything. Its expensive and you have to leave the island for any real shopping. It's not ,because of the island for limited shopping. Theres the two huge bridges connecting the island to the mainland. Its because the city council won't let anything in. Unless you are retiring, I would only recommend visiting Anacortes. Due to the beauty of the island. There's great hiking trails. Plus you have a the ferry system so you can visit the San Juan islands.
Anacortes is a great town to grow up in. It is a small, family-oriented town and is surrounded by beautiful areas to see. There are tons of town events, close-knit activities and clubs and the schools get opportunities and resources. We are on an island so it is a pretty place! we are surrounded by the ocean so you have beaches and there are many activities to do like hiking, biking, and skiing.
