Honestly just moved to the city but lived just outside the city limits all my life and although the crime rate is high. It is concentrated to specific areas. Most all of Alton is beautiful and historic. My neighborhood is an older one near downtown Alton and I feel safe at night. Community is friendly and there is constant revitalization going on. It is definitely on its way up after a rough patch. The areas to stay away from are pretty easily noticed and your not forced to go anywhere near them. There are miles of beautiful streets near plenty to do wether your moving here or visiting, just do some research and youl absolutely love it! And anyone who complains about employment around here just isn't applying themselves. There are businesses everywhere coming in and growing. There's also huge opportunity to start your own!
I'm giving my little town 5 stars. I've lived here all my life and I have traveled alot to other small (and not so small) towns near and far. Alton struggles like many small towns. Like many small towns we lost some major industry starting in the late 70s but Alton continues to reinvent itself. One complaint I read was a problem with homeless people. It's getting worse nationwide. If you want to complain check out Cairo, I'll, Nashville, TN...the list goes on. Also someone complained that 50,000 or so voted for Biden and 76,000 for Trump. Who the heck cares! Btw the current population of Alton is less than 30,000. Give our little town a chance, it'll grow on you.
I love Alton. I just moved here from St. Louis. I was sick of the crime and constant traffic. That being said, I moved across the river to this quaint town and LOVE it. It's so easy and convenient to get just about anywhere. That being said, I'm not too far from Broadway and the one thing I can't STAND is all the motorcycle riders that ride up and down the street for 'fun'. It's so loud it vibrates everything in my house. There should be some noise ordinance for this ridiculousness. Quiet place to retire, yeah right! People who ride these things have NO consideration for other people's desire for peace or quiet.
