Alexandria is a beautiful place to live, it has diverseness and has interest for everyone! Alexandria is about a 20 minute drive from D.C., although the traffic will make it seem longer. There are many things to do in Alexandria as well. There is Old town Alexandria and there is a variety of diverse different cultured foods in Old towne . There are big name clothing stores but little local ones too. There are beautiful little gardens and a waterfront that you can sit and enjoy your local ice cream. Alexandria is a great mixture for wanting to live close to the city but having your quiet time and being able to come back to your suburban neighborhoods.

Alexandria is a great city for millennials and family. Great jobs, walkable, bikable, Farmer's market, excellent restaurants, nightlife, safe, good transportation, exceptional school rankings, etc. Del Ray is by far the best area to live, and Old Town is great as well. The city balances green living with progressive views. Homes are expensive to rent or own, but the job opportunities surpass other areas. 10 to 15 minute drive to DC, right next to another excellent city, Arlington as well. People are very friendly, and dog walking and baby strolling parents are everywhere. Amazing city!
I have lived in Alexandria for essentially my entire life. With that in mind, I probably have some intrinsic bias about the area. But I can honestly say that this a good place to live. The Fairfax County public school system is one of the best in the country. Even as someone who comes from a more impoverished area, crime is fairly low. Culturally, it may be the most diverse city in Virginia, and there are plenty of farmers markets and Whole Foods around for non-GMO grocery options. On the negative side, Alexandria is home to some wealthy zip-codes, which is good in terms of real estate equity, but bad in terms of affordability. Traffic is 50/50, some days you will be pleasantly surprised how quickly things are moving, other days you will be stuck bumper to bumper, however this is aided by decent metrorail system.
