Yorktown Highschool is a predominantly white school. The school contains over 1,300 students overall! Yorktown's academic system is very rigorous, therefore it is important that you take advantage of the tutoring opportunities available to you. There is little to no school spirit at this school. However, this is a highly competitive school! People don't tell you this as you enter into this school. Stay in touch with your counselor as much as possible. Get involved in as many clubs and extra curriculars as you can.
This school is very inclusive with many outstanding opportunities for further action in clubs and many options for student groups. Along with the helpful teachers that help guide students in their free time, we have adequate counselors that can help students with their everyday needs. The environment at school feels very safe and many kids can find friends fairly easily. Many students will smile in the hallways and the overall experience of walking in a newer and remodeled high school leaves you awestruck.
2/5 stars.
As of now, Dec 2020, I am a Junior at Yorktown. On paper, it's a wonderful school: it's newly built, well-funded, and great for college prep. Many students go on to colleges such as UVA, William & Mary, and Virginia Tech.
However, Yorktown lacks in diversity. Most students come from high-income households. A large amount of students are wealthy, spoiled, and entitled brats who are so self-absorbed it hurts to watch. The student parking lot is filled with Mercedes, Audis, and Jeep Wranglers, and many students take their wealth and privilege for granted. It's a toxic, high-pressure environment, where you're constantly comparing yourself to other people, both with academics and appearance. You'll often hear students mock others behind their backs. Mental health issues are very common. The administration is mediocre at best. There's little school spirit too. You might see 5 or 10 people dress up for spirit days out of the 2,200 students. I can't wait to graduate and be done.
