Yorktown High School Reviews
Rating 3.9 out of 5 345 reviews
Yorktown High School has some of the most supportive teachers you’ll ever meet if you can communicate effectively and build relationships. Each department has some strengths and weaknesses, with some teachers standing out more than others but it’s a matter of looking outside your own class to build a deeper understanding and develop a broader perspective. Counselors are always around to help and available almost whenever you need them. Although the environment is somewhat cliquey you can still manage to find some good people and make some great friends. You’ll meet a lot of different people and it helps you build an understanding of the kind of people you wanna surround yourself with.
As far as high schools go, YHS is pretty good. It has strong academics, good, well educated teachers, and strong student support (regarding college prep.) It has abundant resources, with each student getting a personal MacBook kept for all four years, and plenty of money. However, money is not well allocated. Some departments struggle for funding (music, arts, humanities) and teachers purchase basic supplies from their own wallets, while some programs have significant budgets. As a student, the atmosphere and student culture is very pressuring and competitive, and students are often pitted against one another, seeing college applications as a "if she gets in I wont, or vice versa".
The school itself is lacking in diversity, with an estimated ratio of 70:30 white students to poc since the building is located in a predominantly white neighborhood. Putting that aside, the school is pretty standard, with alternating schedules for each day and a ton of clubs to choose from early on in the club fair. School spirit is on the minimalist side but the football games are well attended. Teachers are okay for the most part, there'll always be one that students want more than others due to varying work loads. There has been rumors of some teachers quitting because their personal life was leaked or they had an OF but that's that. Also there was a rough period where students skipped and arrived tardy A LOT, so faculty enforced after school detentions and whatnot. There are also a lot of security guards stationed around. They aren't scary and I think they're there mostly for the appearance of safety since their uniform is literally just a black tee that has security on it.
