Xian Yun Academy of the Arts California Reviews

I was a dance student at Xian Yun Academy for 5+ years. For the Dance program, teachers were strict but knew what they were doing. They would often criticize students for their weights, and certain teachers would even weigh students, although that was fairly uncommon. As someone who struggled for years with their physical appearance and weight (and still does) this took an immense toll on my mental health and I began to take extreme measures to ensure that teachers would not see me as fat, even though I was always relatively slim and of a healthy weight. The academic courses there were often poor, as I was not allowed to take certain AP courses due to the faculty not wanting to create a whole new AP course for such a small amount of students (despite the student population being under 30). The school was also strict on gender segregation and had a serious dating ban, with students even getting in trouble if they were seen hanging out/on dates outside of the school.

Our 12-year-old has danced and schooled at Xian Yun the last two years. She is happy in this bully-free environment after a few educational false starts in the Bay Area. She dances daily, is learning Mandarin (really learning it!) and has a terrific, quite traditional academic program. The academics and dancing please our daughter, and the kindness and community please her parents!
This is a school that hides behind the ideas of upholding traditional Chinese values and having an incredible arts program. There is potential at this school, then again there is also instability. International students make up much of the population, mostly from China, which creates a problem in the level of the classes (they are put with the other students) Regarding the instability of the school, many teachers have left over the years; each year there are new English teachers and different science teachers. Strong, college preparatory academic courses do not seem to be the focus of the school. Censorship seems to be more important than the quality of education (not saying that some of the teachers have not done a good job). If a core arts program, a small school environment, and learning Chinese at the expense of a college-prep education is what you want, then Xian Yun is a good place for you.
