Widener Memorial School Reviews

Overall, my school is tops when it comes to being in a positive environment where everyone feels at home--it's like every staff and every student is one big family. The education quality, however, can use some improving. The classes are special-ed to fit the other students' mental status (some students having mental disabilities), but for the students who have only a physical disability but a yearning for knowledge, like myself, it isn't really suited to meet our needs. We have no science labs--we have plenty of equipment, but never any labs--and homework is barely given out by any of the teachers. Again, it's a great place to go if you're looking for a school that will take care of you like you're their own child, but if you're looking for more of a challenging, college preparatory school then this school is definitely not the place to go.

There aren't many athletic opportunities at my school--they're slim to none, to be honest--except for the full-size swimming pool and basketball team. My school also has a game called Newcomb, which is similar to volleyball, that some of the students participate in. The basketball team competes with some other high schools in the area (but not many) and often has staff v. student games where the teachers play against the team. The swimming program offers a more therapeutic option for some students to participate in. It's great for students with physical disabilities to actually get moving in an environment where gravity isn't much of an issue, so their muscles can get moving more. Other than those choices, the school I attend really isn't big on athletics.
The nurses at the nurses office are definitely on top of everything at this school; there isn't an injury to happen anywhere on the premises that they aren't aware of. When it comes to safety, there hasn't been a situation yet where I haven't felt safe. Most of the teachers have sort of a walkie-talkie system going on with the principal, where they can just page her if there is a situation where feel a bit doubtful of. The administration takes all situations very seriously and will stop at nothing to make sure that the students are safe. We have biweekly fire drills where we go over the rules and proper etiquette in case of a fire. Overall, everyone is, for lack of a better word, on-point when it comes to the health and safety here at Widener.
