From Whitby School

At Whitby, school is just the beginning. Our students 18 months–Grade 8 are challenged to ask big questions and solve real-world problems. As they discover their own talents and interests through authentic inquiry, they begin to see greater potential in themselves and everything around them. We respond to what works for your child and adapt their experience accordingly. As a result, they grow to be exceptionally curious, empathetic and courageous.

Founded in 1958, Whitby is the first school in the U.S. to combine Montessori with International Baccalaureate in an early education program.

My kids have been at Whitby from the primary years on and I have one graduating from 8th grade and another starting Upper School (Middle School) next year and could not be more happy with the education they have gotten. They have flourished both as learners and as human beings in their ability to think critically, problem solve and self-reflect. The brilliant melding of Montessori and IB and the devoted and skilled faculty at the school creates the perfect school for the 21st century. The Upper School (grades 5-8) is a particular gem with small classes sizes, excellent differentiated math program, advanced design classes and project based learning that gives them the competence and confidence to come out of 8th grade prepared for any high school of their choosing. I feel lucky that we found Whitby and that my kids have had the opportunity to have this school form the foundation of their life-long journey of learning!

We love the school! My daughter is excited to go to school every day and comes home bubbling with stories to tell me every day. The Stepping Stones experience is magical - the teachers do an amazing job delivering a true curriculum to such incredibly young children. I think a lot of pre-k programs are basically glorified day care and this is definitely not - it’s a really thoughtfully crafted program based on a deep understanding of how skills are developed and how the brain grows. The community of parents is really wonderful too, we’ve made a lot of friends and have been glad to give our child such a warm, confidence building experience.
Our family has been part of the Whitby School community for 9 years. We have a 6th grader, and a daughter who graduated last year and is now a freshman in high school. I could not more highly recommend the school. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school it attracts families from many different countries, culturally making it wonderfully diverse. The IB curriculum and inquiry-based learning platform makes me wish I had been educated that way myself! I have also embraced the advantages of a school that finishes in 8th grade. It afforded my daughter the opportunity to reflect on her strengths and the things that she valued most in her education. The experience she gained in the application process, standardized testing, and interviews will make the college application process so much easier! She was also able to pick the high school that was the best fit for her. The transition has been seamless, she was more than adequately prepared educationally and socially.
