However bright, motivated and talented high school kids are, they do need guidance, and to be seen as people, not just test scores and varsity letters. Westminster does a phenomenal job of balancing skill building with heart, and sensitivity to the needs of each student for their own growth. Because there are local day students, the best and brightest from the Hartford area, it is easy to misunderstand Westy as a "Connecticut" school, but the range of kids who thrive here is tremendous. So glad I turned down other "higher" ranked schools to be at the best school for me. West will meet you where you are and make you the best you can be, academically, athletically, and as a member of a community.
Review Westminster School
Westminster is very effective at training its students to become independent. A challenging and diverse course load is implemented to prompt students to develop academic responsibility. In the classroom, students are encouraged by willing teachers to ask questions to ensure that they fully understand the material being taught. A wide range of sports and extra-curricular activities are also offered, ensuring that students are well-rounded in a sense that their interests and hobbies are not confined to the classroom. Overall, Westminster lives up to its reputation as one of the best college-prepatory institutions in the nation.
My son has been at Westminster for one year now, and I feel so lucky that we made such an excellent choice. Kids are all super smart, motivated, but also very kind. It is a very nurturing school, and they put lots of emphasis on character. Academics are superb. As an example, 9th grade ( 3rd form) history gives an overview of world religions first, so the kids can better understand history, politics, and current events in our society. They learn in a very comprehensive way before they delve into specialties, and they are seriously challenged by their teachers. Basically a top notch liberal arts education. I was also pleasantly surprised that Westminster was much more diverse than we originally thought it would be ( based on website ratings), which has delighted my son. All in all, a very interesting group of kids.
