This school is a great fit for my kids but it’s not for everyone. In our experience the academic aspect is very strong. I like that the teachers don’t just teach to the staar like surrounding districts. However, it appears most teachers are still covering the staar material as 2 of my kids received perfect scores on the math and reading staar several times. The sports and extracurricular activities are limited compared to surrounding districts but most people who choose this school are aware of this and don’t expect the same. We actually prefer the low-key aspect of the sports since it allows kids the opportunity to be on their school team in sports they might not have a lot of prior experience in.
Most the teachers and administrators have been very responsive when I have a concern.
It seems some people who have issues don’t really research what the IB curriculum is actually like or what sports and extracurricular programs are offered before choosing to send kids here. Surprising.

There are certain aspects of Westlake Academy that are amazing. There are other aspects that are less than acceptable. I have 3 children that have attended Westlake Academy. As of next year, I will only have one. Last year, my son transferred. Next year my oldest daughter will be transferring.
My son transferred because of bullying. Even with repeated contact with the school, my child was repeatedly placed in the same class of a student that bullied him mercilessly. So, enough was enough.
My daughter is transferring because because extracurricular offerings are awful. She wants to play in band. The offerings are so far below what you would see even from a school half this size. What they do offer is extremely expensive.
Another thing that is awful is the grading system. I had two kids that didn’t know how to do long division but we didn’t know because the grading system is awful. When my son transferred to Keller ISD, we instantly knew when he was struggling.

Westlake Academy follows the International Baccalaureate Program. This is an academically challenging program that, to be honest, is not everyone. It requires a lot of time management and a different sector of grading. The tests are mainly catered to the IB Exams, which are taken at the end of your senior year. The assignments and tests are rubric-based, which aligns with the IB rubric. The positives of IB is that it prepares you for college, due to the difficulty of the junior and senior year DP or Diploma Programme. There is a lot of writing that comes with this school, which benefits you in college. This school has a lot of great students that proceeded to go to Ivy League schools and many prestigious institutions. The Academy is very diversified and small, which benefits a lot of students.
